Calamares installer tips

offline install:

Our default installer in the live environment is Calamares, so you can have a smooth and friendly experience to install EndeavourOS on your machine.

Not every product is perfect, so here are some tips to guide you through a smoother install experience by these workarounds to avoid running into the upstream Calamares bugs.

netinstall:

If you choose netinstaller (online install) with the choice of the Desktop Environments, you will get this screen:

Please do only choose one Desktop Environment and leave the default selections as they are! But you can unselect packages you do not need if you know exactly what you are doing!

The rest of the installer will look the same on both methods (offline and online)

If you choose netinstall it will get all packages freshly from the internet (from Repositories) so the install process can take a bit longer then offline install.

You will see that the progress bar will not show any progress some times on the install process, this is not to say that the installer is frozen or something is gone wrong, it is working in the background but some processes do not give progress output to the installer.

You can watch the progress also from a terminal by open one and use this command:

tail -f /home/liveuser/endeavour-install.log

Then you can see exactly what happens and you see that nothing is wrong or frozen!

Calamares partitioning scheme

When you want to install EndeavourOS as your only installed system on your disk, then you can use either the manual or automatic partition choice in the Calamares menu.

Manual partition on EFI systems

When creating the fat32 partition for boot, you’ll notice that the flag ‘esp’ isn’t in the options anymore, you can choose the flag ‘boot’ instead.

To avoid problems, you can make a partition scheme by using Gparted before you start Calamares. When you have set the partitions and flags, you can start up Calamares and choose the manual installation. We recommend this with all installation schemes, by the way.

Dual boot with Windows

This is not a workaround but just an important tip:

When you use the same EFI/fat32 partition that Windows uses for boot, DO NOT FORMAT THE PARTITION. Just to be on the safe side, double-check that you didn’t format it before clicking on the install button.

Log files and bug reports

You can actually help us improve the installer by sending us your logfile when you encountering a problem during install. Calamares makes a logfile by default and you can retrieve it by copy-paste the following in the terminal:

mousepad /home/liveuser/endeavour-install.log

Or pastebin it and show the URL in the forum:

cat /home/liveuser/endeavour-install.log | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

This will upload the log to ix.io and create a short URL to the log file.
